How I Became a Better Person
I have a wonderful life with flaws and upsets woven into it! This imperfect life is mine and I love it.
I believe we should not simply accept our life as it comes to us—but actively examine what makes us tick to see how we can tick better. I take a regular peak at myself—looking backward and forward. When I did recently, I explored 10 Things that Made Me a Better Person.
These are:
1. Growing up in a large family and marrying young
2. Being less popular in school
3. Working in the criminal justice system
4. Giving birth and parenting three active offspring
5. Battling job discrimination for years in court
6. Participating in 10,000+ coaching/counseling conversations
7. Grieving my mother’s death
8. Divorcing some years after a happy 25th
9. Dating again after decades
10. Marrying a second time
What did these 10 things do for me? How did they enrich and shape my life? Notice that none of the items listed are my professional achievements. Many are not even clearly positive events. All of these experiences awakened my inner strengths. Pain and challenges have the highest potential to lead us to our greatest joys and fulfillment.
I am also a person with numerous blessings—easy to take joy and pleasure from what goes well in my life. But more important and productive for me is to apply lessons from those things that do not.
